Just how important is it to know your credit score? It helps...especially when you are considering the major purchases in life like homes, cars or other financial decisions that can impact your finances in a larger way.

As a Realtor, I often work with first-time home buyers who do not know their credit score or are not so familiar with navigating the credit arena. Knowing your credit status helps you substantially when shopping for loans, financing and more.

Over the years I have seen many companies out there that claim to give you a free credit report or free credit score, only to find out once you arrive at their site that they want your credit card information to sell you something. Usually, it's a monthly subscription to a credit monitoring program or the like, which duplicates what many of us already have through credit card companies or financial institutions therefore making it an unnecessary expense.

Is there really a place where you can find out your current credit score, get updates, tips and pointers on helping to improve your credit score? How about a place where you can login anytime and not be charged or have some sales twist to them?

There REALLY IS such a place. I found it awhile back and have tested it out myself. There are no gimmicks, there is no credit card required! Remember, knowledge is power and will help you shop for the best interest rates and deals on those big purchases. This really works and I recommend it as I've tried it and shown it to many of my clients, who love it!

What it means to you:

If you join one of these programs and shop through their website instead of going directly to the retailer's, you can take advantage of extra coupon savings. You can also still use any other coupon offers you find at websites like RetailMeNot.com, CouponCabin.com, CouponAlbum.com and similar sites. By shopping through the program instead of directly from the retailer, you can earn a cash back shopping rebate of 1-30% depending on the retailer. Why not take advantage of this?

If you know a lot of people, you can make money helping others save money by joining these programs and sharing them with others. I would love to have you join me in spreading the word about these great programs because in today's times, everyone is concerned about stretching the holiday gift-giving budget. I Just Got Some GREAT Deals On Video Games at Amazon.com

There's nothing like shopping from your seat and not fighting the Black Friday crowds.

My son's wish list includes several video games. I was able to find some better deals on a few at Amazon.com than I could get in the local stores. Plus a couple of titles I haven't been able to find locally. Overall, I saved time, money and gas and filled the wish list from the comfort of home. That's a winner to me!

When To Go Generic and When To Pay A Little More

When I shop, I often try the generic brands and in many cases they are every bit as good (or better) than their name brand counterparts. You can always compare label to label and often times be amazed how very similar or exact the two are, excepting of course for the name brand and pricing.

Generic brands suffer from a stigma. People tend to think those cheaper versions of name-brand products are of lower quality. In college, when my former classmates and I needed to spend as little as possible, some of us opted for "No Frills" cola, a cheap knock-off of the more popular brand-name soda drinks. This was a pathway to store-brand cola drinks, an acceptable substitute for me as an adult. Too Much Of A Good Thing

Shopping Savvy is an art. But, can you have too much of a good thing? Or, in other words, is it really a great deal to buy in bulk? While in a great many cases it is, there are some instances where it's actually not smart.

So, before you run to the Wholesale Club or stock up at the next BOGO Sale or Markdown, take a peek at this recent article published on Yahoo! Finance. It brings light to many items that you actually should not buy in bulk, for reasons of them going bad, becoming obsolete or taking up too much storage room to make the savings worthwhile.

Best Stuff Not To Buy In Bulk

Too Much of a Good Thing

While the frugal part of me cringes to admit this, not all things are great to buy in bulk. The truth is that some items go bad too quickly, take up too much space in your house or actually cost less to buy it individually. Here are some tips you should know when considering what you should and shouldn't buy in bulk, as well as our list of products that you should generally stick to buying in small doses. Obviously, prices on these items do vary from store to store, but keep these examples in mind. Also, we each consume products differently. If you live in a house with 10 other people, you might want to skip reading this and spend your time looking at apartment listings instead.

Brown Rice

We all know that it's usually not a smart idea to buy perishable products like eggs or milk in bulk, but there are plenty of other things out there that people tend to store indefinitely without realizing they expire within six months to a year. Case in point: brown rice. In general, we tend to think of rice as something that just lasts and lasts, but brown rice (which happens to be better for you than white rice) has a much shorter shelf life because it contains more oil. So, buy in moderation and make sure to store it in a refrigerator if you plan to keep it for long periods of time.

Candy

One key rule of buying in bulk is that you should beware of purchasing guilty pleasures like candy and other junk food. Otherwise, bulk buying can turn into bulk eating. One consumer put it best on Savingadvice.com: "If I go to my local store and but 2 candy bars for $1 a piece, I spend $2 and they will last a week. I buy a box at Costco of 24 candy bars for $12, they still will be gone in a week. Even though the unit price is less, I end up spending more."

Paper Towels

It may sound like a good idea at first. Paper towels are not perishable and they do tend to cost less when you buy them in bulk. But according to Joshua Thomas, a spokesperson for Target, there is a downside to buying this in bulk. "Paper towels may be more evergreen but before you buy them in bulk, you need to think about how much space you have in your home," he said. And the last thing you want is to have paper towels taking up space you could use for other necessities. Just because some bulk items are lighter on your wallet doesn't mean they won't weigh down your life in other ways.

Toilet Paper

Just like with paper towels, you don't want to go overboard purchasing toilet paper. Yes, we all dread that moment when we go to the bathroom only to find there's no toilet paper left, but at the same time, you don't want to have your cabinets and shelves overflowing with rolls of Charmin.

Nuts

In general, you should try to avoid buying nuts in bulk, unless you're the kind of person who munches on them throughout the day. They may be more affordable in bulk, but nuts usually expire within one to two months. "The high fat content in nuts (particularly in peanuts, pecans, and walnuts) causes them to go rancid rather quickly," said Alejandra Ramos, home-cooking expert and creator of the site AlwaysOrderDessert.com. "If you must buy them in large quantities, remember that roasted nuts last longer than raw ones, and shelled ones last the longest. Light, heat, and moisture also affect the quality and they have the tendency to absorb smells so always store nuts in the fridge or freezer. This also goes for seeds and nuts like sesame seeds, flaxseeds, and pine nuts."

Mayo (and Other Condiments)

Ramos also recommends shoppers avoid buying condiments like mayo, ketchup and salad dressing in bulk "unless you'll be using them right away at a large party or event." These items, she said, tend to only last six months to a year and "take much longer to get through than you'd expect."

Vitamins and Nutritional Supplements

Even stuff that's good for you may end up being a bad investment. Several consumers wrote to us about why it's not worth buying vitamins and other supplements in bulk and the experts agree. "Unless you are absolutely certain that you won't mind drinking the same flavor of protein shake every day for the rest of the year, avoid buying the jumbo containers of soy-isolate. Even the most hardcore fitness enthusiasts need variety, and these products do eventually expire," said Linsey Knerl, better known as The Dealista. "The same can be said for vitamins. Unless you are certain that you'll tolerate them well, don't stock up. Sample a smaller size of packaging for a few weeks, note any side effects, and only proceed with an 'economy-size' package if it agrees with you."

Diapers

Knerl also urges parents to refrain from buying diapers in bulk when their children are entering a growth spurt. "I've run into problems when I purchase a large case right before baby grows," she said. "While you can squeeze some kiddos into a smaller size for a time, it can be a hassle to have purchased a large case and then have them go to the next size -- with over 150 diapers in the old size still hanging around."

Bleach

Bleach is another item that you might be inclined to buy in bulk but unfortunately it goes bad over time. According to The Scripps Research Institute, bleach has a shelf life of six months and then "starts to degrade." Each year you keep the bleach around, it loses 20% of its effectiveness, and you lose that much more of the money you put into it originally.

Have you hit a wall with grocery coupons? Is chasing after bargains from store to store costing more in time and gas than it's worth, even for frugal folks?

Knowing how grocers deal out savings through four pricing strategies can help you reach the next level of savings.

"It's an age of transparency now. Consumers now have more weapons than they have ever had," says Venkatesh Shankar, professor of marketing at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

"Once you see the value proposition you are getting out of your stores, you can determine which retailers best meet your needs."

Grocery stores comprise a more than $500 billion industry in the U.S., according to U.S. Census figures. Not surprisingly, there is fierce competition for a pie that large. As a result, profit margins are razor-thin.

Grocers use pricing strategies to make ends meet. These pricing models -- deployed over tens of thousands of items in a typical supermarket -- allow retailers to offer just enough in discounts without giving away the store.

4 pricing strategies - The four major grocery pricing strategies are:

High-low: Popular with savvy bargain hunters who save by stocking up, these supermarkets offer deep markdowns on some items. Typically, high-low grocers offer an enticing array of weekly grocery coupons, promotions, buy-one-get-one-free, or BOGO, offers and special discounts for loyalty-card holders. The grocers recoup their lost profits by charging slightly higher margins on other items. High-low grocers also typically charge vendors for warehousing, shelf space and promotional displays. High-low chains include Kroger, Publix, Safeway and Winn-Dixie.

Everyday low prices: Popular with price-sensitive shoppers, EDLP retailers negotiate rock-bottom wholesale prices from their vendors in lieu of charging fees. They then pass on the savings to customers. EDLP chains include Walmart, Target, Food Lion and Lucky.

Discount clubs: Discount clubs make their profits from membership fees and reduced overhead. As a result, their markup is usually half that of supermarkets. Their warehouse stores typically stock a small fraction of a supermarket's inventory (1,500 items or so) and package it in large quantities to maximize the savings to members. Discount clubs include Costco, BJ's Wholesale Club and Sam's Club.

Aggressive pricing: Although these retailers generally carry fewer than 1,000 items, they specialize in selling name-brand products packaged to sell at attractive prices. Aggressive pricing stores include Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree.

Each pricing strategy offers bargains for shoppers willing to put in the work, says Neil Stern, a senior partner at McMillanDoolittle LLP, a retail consulting firm in Chicago.

Shopping can be rewarding or maddening. We buy stuff we need. We buy stuff we want. And we buy stuff we neither need nor want, not always knowing why. The search for an answer to that question―why?―led me on a three-year fact-finding odyssey in which I delved into the cultural, social, and psychological aspects of how Americans shop. What I found is that the why doesn’t always make sense. Yes, there are clever marketers who provide us with endless reasons to buy, but at the end of the day, nobody puts a gun to our wallets. So our best protection against imprudent purchases is to be aware of what’s influencing us. Here, 10 tips to help you be more mindful with your money.

1. Don't let the store seduce you. Retailers operate on the theory that the quickest way to our credit cards is through our senses. The speakers at Abercrombie & Fitch pump out loud, bass-heavy beats to get teenage hormones rocking; hotels and spas are redolent with aromas of minty freshness; jewelry stores aim high-wattage halogen lights at watches and rings to bring out even more sparkle. These so-called atmospherics entice us so we linger longer and spend more, but they won’t improve the value of the merchandise.

2. Don't let the store scramble your "reference price," either. This marketing term refers to the price that you expect to pay for something (because you have bought that item several times before), and retailers are quite adept at messing with it. Take, for example, a can of tuna. The price in your head is probably around $2.25. But by shrinking the size of the can from six ounces to five, the sellers are making more money, even though the price looks unchanged to you. Sure, when the kids are wailing and you’re in a hurry, you aren’t going to study every price-weight fluctuation. But being aware of this sleight of hand could save you money from time to time.

3. Shopper, know thyself. Some psychologists say that most of us fall into one of two categories: Low self-monitors aren’t too concerned with social feedback and make purchases based on their preference for a product, while high self-monitors buy to fit in. In general, you’ll make smarter purchases if you stick to your shopping temperament. Ignore these thoughts and quite a few buys will never make it out of your closet.

6 Ways Supermarkets Trick You To Spend More Money

Beware of the sneaky ways grocery stores spur spending, and follow our tips to outsmart the system.

1. ENTRANCE AREA - The trap: Stores internally refer to this as the “chill zone.” And with good reason: This spot primes shoppers with impulse buys like DVDs, bulk goods and holiday products that appeal to them emotionally, says Kit Yarrow, a psychology and marketing professor at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. It’s designed to make you consider buying, say, a carton of soda for an impromptu barbecue.

What to do: You might think your best bet is to put on blinders here, but that’ll come back to bite you later on in your shopping trip. Instead, let yourself linger and see these products for what they are: filler items that aren’t on your list. “If you pause now, you’re less likely to impulse-buy the item in the store later on,” says Art Markman, a cognitive science professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

2. PRODUCE DEPARTMENT - The trap: Some experts believe fruits and veggies are placed in the front of the store because shopping for healthy food makes you feel less guilty indulging elsewhere. But Paco Underhill, author of Why We Buy, reveals a more straightforward reason: “Produce has the highest profit margin, and you’re less disciplined at the beginning of your shop.”

What to do: Save produce for last; this will prevent overbuying. Plus, produce is less likely to bruise with less time in your cart.

3. SPECIALS - The trap: Too many sales can encourage more spending. “They fire up emotions that override reasoning skills,” explains Yarrow. “We think ‘bargain’ without considering value.”

What to do: Consider the item’s real value. “If you would pay full price for it, getting it on sale is a good deal. If not, it’s just the sale talking, so skip it.”

4. BURIED PRODUCTS - The trap: Stores place popular items in the middles of aisles so you have to pass lots of other items to get to what you need. “Research has shown that people buy what’s in front of them,” says retail science expert Herb Sorensen, author of Inside the Mind of the Shopper.

What to do: Keep moving. If it isn’t on your list, skip it. If you still want it before checking out, go back and get it, but chances are “you’ll either forget or find that it’s not worth it to make the trek,” says Markman.

5. PRIVATE LABELS - The trap: Shocker: They aren’t always the best deals.“Many brand names are fighting to stay relevant by offering sales so that they’re cheaper than the private label,” says Yarrow. As a result, stores are placing their private-label goods in more prominent spots so “they’re easier to find, making shoppers less likely to notice sales,” she adds.

What to do: Comparing prices every single time is a must if you want to be sure you’re getting the best deal.

6. SAMPLES - The trap: “Even if you’re not hungry, a bite of food physically signals your body to get ready for a meal,” says Markman. Research shows that these physiological changes make you a less disciplined shopper.

What to do: Hold off on samples until the end, “right before checkout, so the insulin rush won’t affect your bottom line,” says Markman.

Welcome to Shopping Savvy Mama's new blog! I am excited to begin this journey of sharing great deals, discounts, freebies and more with other families.

In todays economic times, it seems everyone is looking at ways to stretch the family budget and make our dollars go further. This is old news to me as a single Mom who is self employed. When you work for yourself, your income varies and with it goes the ups and downs of finances. Over the years, I have learned many ways to stretch my spending dollar, making it go further and often getting "more bang for my buck" so to speak.
